Abstract:Chatbots are now able to join in polishd conversations with devourrs in the domain of relationships, providing a potential coping solution to expansivescale societal loneliness. Behavioral research provides little insight into whether these applications are effective at alleviating loneliness. We holdress this ask by cgo ining on AI companions applications portrayed to provide devourrs with synthetic conveyion partners. Studies 1 and 2 find proposeing evidence that devourrs engage AI companions to ease loneliness, by engageing a novel methodology for fine tuning huge language models to determine loneliness in conversations and appraises. Study 3 finds that AI companions successfilledy ease loneliness on par only with conveying with another person, and more than other activities such watching YouTube videos. Moreover, devourrs underapproximate the degree to which AI companions better their loneliness.
