Barry Keoghan & Paul Mescal Eyed to Star in Sam Mendes' Beatles Biopic

  • Sam Mendes to direct The Beatles biopics, bringing their story to life from four varying band perspectives.
  • Casting lineup includes Harris Dickinson, Paul Mescal, Barry Keoghan, and Charlie Rowe as iconic band members.
  • Sony Pictures Entertainment is set to release global theatrical Beatles films in 2027, with Mendes as a producer.

Academy Award-winning director Sam Mendes will bring TheBeatles to life in a new format. Sony Pictures has confirmed that Mendes will be at the helm of four separate Beatles biopics, each told from the perspective of a different band member. This approach will provide a comprehensive portrayal of the legendary rock band’s rise to fame.

The casting for these films is beginning to shape up with some notable names attached to play the iconic musicians, as reported by The InSneider. Harris Dickinson is slated to portray John Lennon, bringing his acclaimed acting chops from Triangle of Sadness to the role. Paul Mescal, fresh from his Oscar-nominated performance in Aftersun, is cast as Paul McCartney.

Barry Keoghan, another Oscar nominee known for his role in The Banshees of Inisherin, will take on the character of Ringo Starr. Meanwhile, Charlie Rowe from Slow Horses will complete the quartet as George Harrison. However, a recent update states that Rowe has denied the casting rumors.

This series of films, all financed and distributed by Sony Pictures Entertainment, is scheduled for a global theatrical release in 2027. While specific release dates for each film remain under wraps, the studio has hinted at a groundbreaking strategy for their debut. Director Mendes will serve as a producer through Neal Street Productions alongside collaborators Pippa Harris and Julie Pastor. Jeff Jones, CEO of the Beatles-founded Apple Corps, who also executive produced the acclaimed docu-series The Beatles: Get Back, will be involved as well.

Four Films, Four Perspectives – Sam Mendes’ Vision for The Beatles Biopics

In an unprecedented move, The Beatles and Apple Corps Ltd.—representing not only Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr but also the estates of the late John Lennon and George Harrison—have fully licensed their life stories and music for a scripted cinematic portrayal. This venture will be the first time such extensive rights have been granted for a film about the Beatles.

Mendes has expressed both honor and excitement at the opportunity to dive into the lives of what many consider the greatest rock band of all time. Mendes’s vision challenges traditional film experiences, aiming to transform a routine cinema outing into something extraordinary. The director said:

I’m honored to be telling the story of the greatest rock band of all time, and excited to challenge the notion of what constitutes a trip to the movies.

Pippa Harris, a collaborator on the project, stressed the unique nature of this endeavor, saying,

“We intend this to be a uniquely thrilling, and epic cinematic experience: four films, told from four different perspectives which tell a single story about the most celebrated band of all time.”

Is It Time for a New Beatles Biopic?

With so much new Beatles media surfacing in the last few years, it might be the moment for an epic Fab Four biopic.

“To have The Beatles’ and Apple Corps’ blessing to do this is an immense privilege,” Harris added. “From our first meeting with Tom Rothman and Elizabeth Gabler, it was clear that they shared both our passion and ambition for this project, and we can’t think of a more perfect home than Sony Pictures.”

Tom Rothman, Chairman and CEO of Sony Pictures’ Motion Picture Group, mirrored Mendes and Harris’s sentiment. “Theatrical movie events today must be culturally seismic. Sam’s daring, large-scale idea is that and then some,” said Rothman.
