Daisy Ridley Reveals Disappointing Detail About Her Current Star Wars Future

  • Daisy Ridley confirmed she’s contracted for one new
    Star Wars
movie, which is set 15 years after
    The Rise of Skywalker
    and directed by Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy.
  • Ridley, known for her role as Rey, shared her experience of fame following her massive role in the
    Star Wars
    sequels on the Smartless podcast.
  • Kathleen Kennedy, Lucasfilm president, addresses the concerning toxic side of the
    Star Wars
fandom, particularly noting the impact on women in the franchise.

With Daisy Ridley set to return to the Star Wars universe as Rey Skywalker to lead a new set of movies, the actress has revealed how many projects she’s currently signed on for in a galaxy far, far away. Ridley played the leading role in 2015’s Star Wars: The Force Awakens, which ushered in a new era of Star Wars projects under the Disney banner. Since then, she has reprised the role of Rey, a force-sensitive prodigy, twice in the franchise. Following the close of the sequel trilogy in 2019, it was confirmed that Rey would return again, and new details are slowly being revealed.

Daisy Ridley appeared on the Smartless podcast to promote her upcoming role in The Young Woman and the Sea, and was asked about her level of involvement in the upcoming Rey movie(s). During the conversation, Ridley revealed that she is only contracted for one new movie in the Star Wars universe, although she hopes to return for more. “I’m doing one for now,” Ridley said on the podcast. The actress then discusses her excitement for the upcoming project, describing it as a completely different film than her past involvement in the Star Wars sequels. She continued:

“It’s very cool. Different writer, different director. It will be quite a different feeling I imagine. Steven Knight is writing, and directing is Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy, who has made some unbelievable documentaries. And it’s very exciting.”

Daisy Ridley, like the rest of the Star Wars fanbase, knows few details about the upcoming movie. It has been teased that the new movie will be set 15 years after The Rise of Skywalker, and will follow Rey as she tries to rebuild the Jedi Order. Ridley followed her answer up by saying “I should be reading a script soon-ish.” Steven Knight is best known for creating the hit British drama, Peaky Blinders, while Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy is a 2x Oscar Winning director of acclaimed documentaries like A Girl in the River and Saving Face.

How Daisy Ridley Dealt With Her Star Wars Fame

Her appearance as Rey in all three Star Wars sequels was by far Daisy Ridley’s biggest role at that point in her career. As a result, the actress had to prepare herself for her public and professional life to shift overnight. During the podcast, Ridley said she didn’t quite know what to expect. However, Ridley said her fame ebbed and flowed following the release of The Force Awakens. Speaking to Jason Bateman, Sean Hayes, and Will Arnet, three actors who all know about movie-stardom (and the hosts of the podcast), Ridley said:

“I didn’t know what to expect. And everyone had made it out to be crazy, crazy, crazy. And obviously, as you all know, when things come out there’s a furry of activity, and then things calm down again. So it was confronting because it was strange, initially, for people to want to chat, and I’m not that chatty. And then it sort of goes away again. It took its time to calm.”

Kathleen Kennedy Says ‘A Lot of Women’ in Star Wars Struggle With ‘Male Dominated’ Toxic Fandom

Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy responds to the toxic side of the Star Wars fandom, saying women are much more likely to receive attacks online.

Daisy Ridley joined John Boyega and Oscar Isaac as the newcomers to the Star Wars universe in The Force Awakens, with Harrison Ford (Han Solo), Carrie Fisher (Princess Leia), and Mark Hamill (Luke Skywalker) all returning as the iconic trio from the original trilogy.

All of Daisy Ridley’s performances as Rey in the
Star Wars
universe can be streamed on Disney+.
