Nathan Jones, who plays Rictus Erectus in George Miller’s Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga, has had to release a statement online following multiple harassing messages regarding his character. Set before the events of Fury Road, Furiosa shows the titular heroine’s rise in power from a kidnapped child to Immortan Joe’s strongest imperator. In the film, Jones plays a younger version of Rictus, one of Immortan Joe’s sons, who has an uncomfortable interest in the younger Furiosa (Anya Taylor-Joy).

Nathan Jones took to Facebook to share a statement reminding those fans that he is an actor. Jones reminded audiences that Furiosa is a fictional story, filled with violent and controversial characters, and it’s his job to bring the script to life through his performance. His full statement read:

“I’ve noticed a few queries and private messages about my role in Mad Max: Furiosa. Particularly regarding a scene with young Furiosa. This is a very sensitive subject, and I want to emphasize that it involves a fictional character. The details can be uncomfortable, and as an actor, my job is to portray a character based on the direction and script provided to me. I appreciate your understanding and support in recognizing the distinction between fiction and reality. Thank you.”

The uncomfortable scenes in question feature Richter chasing the younger Furiosa (played by child actor Alyla Browne) around the Citadel. After cornering her, Richter becomes obsessed with stroking her hair, with clearly implied sexual undertones. This is as far as the scene goes, but quickly establishes Richter as a morally twisted villain in the franchise. The scene is understandably uncomfortable to watch. However, it appears some audiences forgot to break their suspension of disbelief when messaging Nathan Jones directly to complain about the scene’s content.

Are There More Mad Max Movies Releasing in the Future?

The future of George Miller’s contemporary revival of the Mad Max franchise is currently uncertain. 2015 Fury Road reignited the sparks of fandom in the franchise, scoring big at the box office and earning 6 Oscars in the process. Of course, Furiosa will have to wait until 2025 to begin its Oscars campaign, but its box office fate is currently less than stellar. Furiosa underperformed at the box office on the worst Memorial Day opening weekend since 1995, and quickly dropped in the following weeks. As a result, it is currently uncertain whether studios will back another Mad Max movie.

What Does Furiosa’s Box Office Performance Mean for George Miller’s Mad Max Plans?

Furiosa’s poor box office reaction has cast doubt on George Miller’s plans for The Wasteland, another Mad Max spin-off.

In the increasingly unlikely event that they do, Miller already has an abundance of ideas about where the franchise can go. While Furiosa has had her origins shown on screen, Max Rockatansky’s (Tom Hardy) backstory still remains a mystery. Miller enjoys keeping the character’s past a mystery, but the writer/director had planned out where Max was a year before the events of Fury Road. Additionally, George Miller also has plans for a Wasteland film, which will give audiences more details about how the world fell into chaos.
