Since its debut on Netflix on June 1, 2024, Godzilla Minus One has once again become the talk of fans everywhere, with many experiencing it for the first time following its theatrical success. Released in 2023, Godzilla Minus One would go on to take in an impressive $115.8 million dollars at the box office against a budget of around $10 million, making it the highest-grossing Japanese Godzilla film of all-time. In the United States, it quickly became the highest-grossing Japanese film ever, and the third highest-grossing foreign-language film behind Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, and Life is Beautiful.

However, while fans are heaping well-deserved praise upon the Toho film, there are many on X (formerly Twitter) that have taken issue with Godzilla Minus One’s English-dubbed version that changes the delivery of an all-important line at the end of the movie. It comes when Shikishima learns that the love of his life, Noriko, is still alive, and the pair reunite in an emotional scene that sees Noriko ask him in the Japanese version, “Is your war finally over?” The question is both referring to Shikishima’s literal war with Godzilla, but more subtly it’s also about the personal war that has raged within him over the course of the film.

In the English-dubbed version of Godzilla Minus One, the words get lost in translation, and instead see Noriko ask in English in that same scene, “Can this war of yours finally be done?” The tone with which it’s delivered makes it sound like Noriko is more annoyed with Shikishima than anything, instead of asking a heartfelt question that’s meant to elicit an emotional response.

Fans have taken to social media to voice their displeasure with the translation, with one user saying they’ll “never forgive the dubbers for changing the most impactful line” in the movie:

More users piled on to agree with the sentiment, with one calling it their “biggest complaint,” and another saying the dubbed version is much “weaker” than the Japanese original.

Godzilla Minus One Made Streaming History Despite Its Translation Flaws

As one of the most anticipated streaming releases in recent memory, despite the flaws in its English-dubbed version, Godzilla Minus One managed to make a little history upon its surprise debut. After it left theaters on February 1, 2024, there was little to no information as to when the film would make its way to home media in the United States. Without warning, it was made available to Netflix subscribers on June 1, 2024, to coincide with the films’ VOD purchase and rental release as well.

Fans wasted no time in spreading the word about the Oscar-winning Godzilla film, which led to it being not only number one on Netflix, but number one on iTunes, making it the first movie in history to hold the top spot on both a subscription-based platform, and a paid platform simultaneously.

Godzilla Minus One Director Wants More Legendary Kaiju in the Sequel

Godzilla Minus One director Takashi Yamazaki reveals hopes for a sequel, wants to maintain serious tone when depicting kaiju-versus-kaiju battles.

While no official sequel to Godzilla Minus One has been announced, given its success, it almost seems inevitable that it will happen at some point. In the meantime, director Takashi Yamazaki has reportedly found his next film, which won’t be a sequel to Godzilla, but rather an adaptation of the manga series, Barefoot Gen.
