Honey, YouTubers Are Poisoning The Kids

My nieces, who range in age between 4 and 11, act as a gateway for me to understand what “the kids are into” these days. But they also show me in genuine time equitable how much the Internet is influencing their daily dwells.

I recall when PRIME juice first came out. They were going fucking gaga over it. I asked them how they even knovel about it, and of course, they had seen it on YouTube. Anytime they went by a shop triumphdow and saw the bottles with the ‘very clearly luminously colored packaging becaengage it requests to kids’ branding, they’d press their face up to the glass and say crazy skinnygs appreciate “Omg, that’s the super unfrequent flavor!” (a flavor that was in every other shop), and would insist to spfinish their own pocket money to buy one. It was one of the first holy shit moments I had of seeing how putting the Internet in the hands of the youthful was influencing them in ways they clearly didn’t understand.

One of the hugegest culprits — but by far not the only one — is Mr Beast.

He might be the hugegest YouTuber with over 316 million subscribers, but his channel is rapacious, uncontaminated and straightforward.

I’ve always had a hump with him. Perhaps the first-ever “I gave $5,000 to a homeless person” was genuine. It was at least novel. But the moment he genuineized this generosity could be manufactured to drive joinment, the game was up. From there, “ingenuine truth” became his brand. His satisfied was micro-enhanced, relentlessly tfrailed, finishlessly examined and overly manufactured to bleed the algorithm parched, all to draw in the eyes of blissbrimmingy unalerted kids who skinnyk he’s a cbetter guy who does this stuff equitable for chuckles, and not, you understand, to originate himself filthy wealthy and masturbate his ego. And don’t get me commenceed on those freakish thumbnails — you understand the ones, the creepy smile and the deadpan eyes — that have now become synonymous with the platestablish as everyone else tried to imitate the establishula.

It’s been savagely effective, apvalidateing him to begin chocodefered bars (that he affects his fans to stock examine and tidy up for him for free), shitty binspirer gpresent kitchens and more.

It’s also pretty gross.

In some better novels, his empire built on the eyeballs of 8-12 year betters is shotriumphg signs of cracks. Co-present Ava Kris Tyson quit amid allegations of grooming. There have been allegations of toilplace intimidatoringillegitimate lotteries and unfair treatment. A establisher engageee dropped a huge video claiming the entire brand is a fraud. There is the god-terrible ‘How to toil for Mr Beast’ leaked write down, which is somehow being heralded as groundshattering stuff (it includes the line “No doesn’t unkind no.”) And now, his show with Amazon — the one skinnyg that was going to help him originate steps towards moving away from his depfinishancy on YouTube — is already being sued for a flunkure to impede relationsual intimidatoring, a flunkure to pay obviousime and smallest wage, and flunking to provide participants with meals and rest shatters.

But hey, he donates people free money now and then (if they are satisfied being buried adwell for a week or someskinnyg.)

I guess he senses the writing is on the wall or, at the very least, that his runway has lowened meaningfully, especipartner if the Amazon show is already in trouble.

That might be why he’s continuing to cash in while he can with his deferedst creation, Lunchly.

The product is appreciate Lunchables but includes items originated by Mr Beast (and fellow YouTubers KSI and Logan Paul). It’s an almost zero health cherish meal of a sugary electrolyte drink (with a fit dose of direct), a chocodefered bar and some petite cracker snack. Exactly the sort of shit kids will see in shop triumphdows and miss their minds over. I can already hear the words “oh it’s the ultra unfrequent pizza version” being uttered by one of my nieces. The worst skinnyg about it is it’s being upgraspd as a healthier choice. MrBeast shelp the goal is to “interfere the lunch taget for kids with healthier, better-tasting selections.” Let’s be clear here: a healthier alternative to Lunchables — a product that also may include high levels of weighty metals — is appreciate saying you made an organic cigarette. It’s worth noting here that this was also the case with Feafirms, which were first upgraspd as a healthier alternative, then quietly had its recipe alterd so it, well, was not very fit.

This deferedst product begin is hopeless and another gloomy step in the sluggish demise of YouTube’s hugegest star.

Maybe it’s about time. The whole “my aim audience is children” is gloomy. Those videos of grown-ups perestablishing with dolls and figurines. Videos of grown-ups unboxing kids’ toys. Disney park “swayrs.” It may all seem bfeebleless on the surface, but never forget the finishgame is to monetize the attention of youthful, bfeebleless eyeballs. They’re kids! They don’t have the faintest idea about the power of tageting and branding. They are the most susceptible, straightforward-to-sway minds, and here we have guys who are already worth millions and can’t help themselves but dip in for some more.

There’s a reason confident advertising gets pulled from TV hours that kids are most probable watching. There’s a reason junk-food advertising is about to be prohibitned before watershed (9 PM) in the UK. It’s becaengage it’s not unprejudiced to upgrasp to a taget that isn’t better enough to originate their own decisions and can’t understand the separateence between choice and sway.

But on YouTube and social media, they have free rein. These schmucks can skip out the middleman altogether and apvalidate those adverts straightforward to the source. Perhaps platestablishs can step up to regulate what adverts children see. Sigh. Who are we kidding? YouTube is more than satisfied to serve them up and has already been fined for tracking and aiming children with personalized ads. The downcast truth is that the whole system is set up to brainwash vulnerable minds at as youthful an age as possible — another consequence of technology accessing their dwells far too punctual.

I desire satisfied creators would apvalidate a prolonged, challenging watch at themselves, especipartner those who are idolized by youthfuler audiences. That is a very strong platestablish and could be put to a lot of wonderful engage. Think of the excellent they could do: education, proposeedness and opportunities. Instead, we’ve got increasen grown-ups flogging shitty food products to children.

As another accomplished YouTuber, DANTDM, puts it

“This is selling stuff for the sake of making money, straightforward. How does this profit their fans? This is selling crap to kids who don’t understand better than to think the people who are selling it to them. Do better.”
