Fans who have been anticipating the release of the director’s cut of Zack Snyder’s Rebel Moon saga won’t have to wait too much longer, as both chapters are set to release on Netflix with entirely new names on August 2, 2024. Rebel Moon – Part One: A Child of Fire was originally released on December 15, 2023, followed by Rebel Moon – Part Two: The Scargiver this past April. While the films have been the subject of much debate, both chapters quickly rose to the top of the Netflix charts despite the negativity surrounding them.

As per Variety, the new director’s cuts will be called Rebel Moon – Chapter One: Chalice of Blood and Rebel Moon – Chapter Two: Curse of Forgiveness. The R-rated entries are being described as “viciously sexier and bloodier” versions of the originals, which were both rated PG-13. The total runtime for the new versions has yet to be revealed, but you can check out the synopsis for the Rebel Moon director’s cut chapters below.

“In Snyder’s director’s cut, a peaceful settlement on a moon in the furthest reaches of the universe finds itself threatened by the armies of the tyrannical Regent Balisarius, and Kora (Sofia Boutella), a mysterious stranger living among the villagers, becomes their best hope for survival.

Tasked with finding trained fighters who will unite with her in making an impossible stand against the Motherworld, Kora assembles a small band of warriors — outsiders, insurgents, peasants, and orphans of war who share a common need for redemption and revenge.

As the shadow of an entire Realm bears down on the unlikeliest of moons, a new army of heroes is formed.”

No stranger to director’s cuts, Zack Snyder’s R-rated versions of his Rebel Moon saga will have nearly an hour of extra footage added in, similar to what transpired with the director’s cut of Justice League back in 2021. The original 2017 theatrical version clocked in at two hours long, while the Snyder cut which was released to streaming on Max came in at a little over four hours.

The 58-year-old Snyder told Netflix Tudum last year that his director’s cut of Rebel Moon is a “settle-in deep dive” version of the film, with the extra footage making it truly “a legitimate extended universe version.”

“The director’s cut is close to an hour of extra content, so I think it’s a legitimate extended universe version. You really get to see a lot. It’s just more painted-in all the way.
The director’s cut is a settle-in deep dive
, which I have notoriously done throughout my career.”

The award-winning director would also go on to reiterate that he specifically shot scenes for Netflix while making the films, knowing that there would eventually be a director’s cut of Rebel Moon. As for how he got started with making his own cuts in the first place? Snyder says he’s not really sure, but it’s something he’s always had to “fight for” along the way.

“I don’t know how I got into this director’s cut thing, but what I will say about it is that, for me, the
director’s cuts have always been something I had to fight for
in the past and nobody wanted it. It was this bastard child that I was always trying to put together because they felt like there was a deeper version. And with Netflix,
we shot scenes just for the director’s cut
. So in that way, it’s really a revelation because it gives that second kick at the can for big fans.”

Fans can see for themselves if the R-rated director’s cuts were worth the wait when Rebel Moon – Chapter One: Chalice of Blood and Rebel Moon – Chapter Two: Curse of Forgiveness hit Netflix on August 2, 2024.
